Race #4: River Road Circuit Race- March 18, 2006
It was back to the dead-flat River Road circuit for a day of racing in perfect weather, except for the wind. Not that the breakaway group in the A race minded, as the pack separated into three bunches, with the lead group being decisive to the finish and coming fairly close to lapping the last group. That's no mean feat on a 6.2 km course.
On the last lap, the small group of lead riders shattered, and Kevin Calhoun (Rocky Mountain Bicycles) was there to pick up the pieces. Brian Ecker of K2 brushed aside his challengers for second, and Masi-Adobe's Sean Dawson was there to sweep up third place.
The B pack stayed together from beginning to end, with no break getting out of sight of the pack. Mike Boehm of Team Whistler/Nature's Path won the massive bunch kick, chased to the line by Ryan Watts and Boehm's teammate, the evergreen Tony Routley. Tony's podium finish came on his 50th birthday!
The C finish was taken by Christian Hansen, chased to the line by EV's own Steven Ou. Obscured race numbers were a problem in all categories, but especially in the C group. If your number is flapping in the breeze, the finish-pickers can't tell what it is!

Race #3: Armstrong! - March 12, 2006
No upgrade points, just suffering. That's the name of the game when the Spring Series comes to the Armstrong circuit in Fort Langley.
Excellent weather and dry roads greeted the riders Sunday morning, but Armstrong is all about the hill.
In the C race, Jonathan Page prevailed over Jeremy Stothers, with Frank Schimunek rounding out the podium.
The B group survived with a large pack through the last lap, but Escape's own Jason Thompson made it look easy, riding away from the group on the final climb, and finishing well ahead of the rest of the group. John Markez and Matt Savage took second and third in the uphill sprint to the finish, and Ron Klopfer (Coastal) and Eric Smith (Bow Cycles) rounded out the top five.
A small bunch stayed away for much of the race in A's, but a pursuing peloton reabsorbed most of the riders on the last lap. Cory Lange of Symmetrics and Damian Waugh of Masi-Adobe remained clear to the end, though, followed by Waugh's teammates, Scott Slater and Sean Dawson. Coastal's Larry Zimich finished fifth.

Race #2: Aldergrove Zero Avenue Road
Race - March 11, 2006
Today's races happened under clear skies but with persistent wind on the course. The deceptively selective course drove the riders to their limits.
The A group saw a group of three escape from the bunch, and they stayed away until the end, when Rocky's Kevin Calhoun got away from the break to take the win. John Tolkamp of Escape and Jeff Sherstobitoff of Symmetrics cruised to second and third, respectively, and Murray Solem of Blak Dog won the bunch sprint over Nick Rowe, Espoir Laval.
The B pack was a spirited gang, and although the wind and a fast pack minimized the number of breaks, Jeff Ain (Escape Velocity) got away with a lap and a half to go, and never looked back. The heavily contested sprint was taken by Eric Smith of Bow Cycles, with Coastal teammates Anselmo Rossiello and Ron Klopfer picking up third and fourth.
The same wind that kept the B group together shattered the C's, and a lead group of less than ten sprinted for the win. Frank Schimunek won it, with Paul Falcon of Coastal in second. Dave Richardson, Peter Curtain, and Brook Glanville rounded out the top five.

Race #1: River Road Circuit
Race - March 5, 2006
The start of the road season opened today in BC with the first of five weekends of racing in the dEVo/Escape Velocity Sisu Spring Road Race Series. Under cool and cloudy skies and later a very light rain a new season opener record of 243 riders contested the traditional 6.2 km flat opening course. The C group saw nearly 100 competitors in their group with Jeremy Srothers taking the win followed by Ryan Cousineau (Escape Velocity), Stephan Ball, Brad Bisset (Wedgewood) and Paul Falcon (Coastal).
It became evident very early on that in this category there are many riders who will be forced to move up to maintain the role and integrity of the C group as a development category for new and novice riders. The opening laps saw the C group post lap times very close to the B's and A's causing the novice riders to be shed very early from the group. It was the fastest race in the history of the C group.
In the B race it was a fast and steady pace throughout the 13 lap, 80 km race ending in a large group sprint. Taking top honours went to Ron Klopfer followed closely by Anselmo Rossiello (Coastal) and Viktor Brudov with Brian Griffin and Mike Boehm rounding out the top five.
The A race saw a few breaks come and go with the most significant being a solo break of 2 laps, gaining up to 50 seconds by BiciSport rider Jamie Sparling. Sparling was eventually brought back by a chase of 8 riders who when catching Sparling formed the winning move. Sparling then attacked again with about 2 laps remaining and stayed away solo with Western Washington University rider Nicolas Clayville taking the sprint for second and Jason Fluckiger (Bayside), Carl Jacobson (Masi-Adobe) and Peter Kerklaan rounding out the top five.
